Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We sought out this program because of the possibilities of where we were going as a school - we were looking at innovative approaches to education and this program opened a box of unknowns: "what if"s. We knew of the School of One model and so we applied for the grant through our district.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

One of our biggest challenges is "building the airplane while it's flying" (technology changes and updates). We've learned to understand that we'll be working in an imperfect system, but we must stay focused on how far along we've come. One of the most helpful things in this regard is to be flexible and resilient to focus on learning.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Make sure you have a strong teacher team that shares your vision of innovation because it's going to live and die with the teachers. You must recruit, train, and support teachers in this environment. To train and support our own teachers, we've built in daily meetings so that they're constantly sharing information'and this has built our own, strong culture.

School Overview

J.H.S. 088 Peter Rouget (Middle School 88) strives to prepare its students not only for high school, but also college down the line. To do this, students choose to join one of three "houses," or tracks of education: the School of Media Arts & Technology (SMART), School for Medical & Health Careers (Medical), and School for Integrated Studies through the Arts (SISTA). Three years ago, MS88 received a technology grant from the NYDOE, and students in the SMART house had the opportunity to learn math via School of One.
