Implementation Q & A

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

It's hard for the students to understand the idea of self-pace. It's difficult for them to realize that then they're done, they're done: they don't need to sit around waiting for their peers. But we've been tackling this by streamlining course completion times with goal-setting and planning.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Have a professional development system that includes coaching. Also have an instructional rubric so that there is a common language and professional expectations that everyone understands.

Select up to two focus areas you feel that you demonstrate leadership in, and tell us why here:

AdvancED Accreditation - Merit Learning Center is an approved alternative education program in Indiana. Merit Learning Center is the only approved program that has earned accreditation.

TAP System - Teacher Excellence.
Student Achievement. Opportunities for All - Merit Learning Center (through Goshen Community Schools) has successfully implemented the TAP System. All staff participates in weekly professional development meetins facilitated by a Master Teacher, a Mentor Teacher, and an Administrator.
