At St. Therese we have a desire to reach all learners, but must do so efficiently. Multiage classrooms and blended learning allow us to make that desire a reality. We worked with the Alliance for Education (Notre Dame) to create an implementation plan that worked for our school. The station rotation model allows students to work with a teacher on the skills needed, to work in small collaborative learning groups and to work individually at their just right levels. We first looked at our culture to make sure all learning styles and ability levels were welcomed and appreciated. We wanted to set goals and expectations that went hand in hand with blended learning.
Teaching the little ones to log on took some time. Each teacher came up with a process and slowly students became independent.
Give yourself time - one step at a time. Moving from teacher-led to student-driven learning is an ongoing process. As we have learned to evaluate data we have come to understand that one size does not fit all.
