Our model has always been A La Carte and we chose that model based on the needs of the students. We wanted to allow them to have online classes but not be completely based online'the best of both worlds, so to speak.
It was difficult to coordinate for all of our tests. Students doing a STAR reading test have to coordinate tests with the brick-and-mortar school. They've tripled the number of standardized tests in Wisconsin, so that has been a challenge. We solved it by coordinating through our Student Services office.
Network with other programs. It can often feel like a competition, but it's not. Talk to them about what has worked for them and what hasn't. It's nice to be able to call other schools and talk about challenges.
The Advanced Learning Academy of Wisconsin is a state-recognized, virtual charter school, available to Wisconsin residents in grades K-12 and chartered by the Barron Area School District. The school was created to help meet the needs of the students within the district who wanted more options than those available through the local schools. Its scalability as a virtual charter has enabled it to expand quickly to help meet the needs of students throughout the state of Wisconsin.
