Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We chose this model in order to provide students the flexibility of online learning (choice of path, pace, time, and place) along with the support of having direct, face-to-face access to the teacher.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Our biggest challenge has been creating a culture in which students have great flexibility, but live up to high expectations, staying focused on their work and making adequate progress. One way we address this problem is through through success coaching - each student has a success coach that they meet with once a week. In this meeting, students set goals for the week and discuss their challenges to learning and how they're overcoming them. The success coach communicates closely with parents and teachers to help the student achieve their goals.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Create clear expectations for students and teachers and be willing to adapt quickly when you need to. Invest heavily in creating a positive and flexible culture.
