When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We are a small private school in North Texas. We are over 65 years old but have never had a high school. The school began a high school in 2011 with low numbers and high cost of staff. A new CEO was brought in with the vision of Blended Learning.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

The fear of students on a computer all day, no social life of students and learning "on their own". It is still something we battle and it is still a large fear.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Debunk the myths of Blended Learning as soon as you can! Communication is the biggest key! We are still in need of help doing this.

1) Using a blended learning with 90% of it online and using the teachers as Academic Coaches. They work very well getting students to gain the confidence in themselves as well as teaching them how to problem solve solutions when they do not know the answer and how to find it.
2) Flex Model: We have created the right environment to allow students to have a quiet area, break area and collaboration area. Students have the freedom to choose where they study best.

School Overview

We use a blended learning approach because it creates an individualized result for each student challenging them academically as well as honing their “soft skills”, such as time management, self-advocacy & self-discipline, which greatly benefits them in the college and career world. All our grades use some format of Blended Learning, but our Senior High uses the Flex Model of the Blended Learning approach the most. Our program allows our students to go at their own pace, collaborate with their peers and seek help from our "Academic Coaches" or the Teacher Of Record that is at our school. The belief that online means no teachers is not accurate. The teachers in our Blended Learning Flex Model in our Senior High are crucial for the success of the student and the program. They help lay the foundation for these students to be independent and confident learners.

Our school teaches ages 3 through grade 12.
