I-DEA was designed to support families who wish to school from home, giving them the administrative, academic, technical and structural support they need to achieve a high level of success. I-DEA implemented the Enriched Virtual model as it works well for distance education students. Students are paired with high-performing, certified content and contact teachers. They learn in a combination of three platforms: 1) virtual courses accessed from their home environment, 2) face-to-face on-campus instruction and peer interaction, and 3) they are coached by their parents using approved distance education curriculum.
One of the biggest challenges to implementation was balancing the home instruction with the need for Center-based instruction. Many of our students live in outlying rural areas, with limited education options and often times limited technical options. We established a responsive technology support department to assist families with all their technology concerns and also designated a resource center in each region of the state, to support on-campus activities and face-to-face teacher interaction. Ease and frequency of effective communication have been another key to providing students and families with everything they need to excel in and enjoy their educational experience.
Networking with other blended educators, purposefully reading and researching and then staying focused every day on delivering quality to all stakeholders is key. Don't let ambition and speed deter you from purposed, well-planned, methodical growth and delivery.
Idaho Distance Education Academy (I-DEA) is a state-wide virtual charter school that is part of Gem Innovation Schools, a charter management organization that also manages three Gem Prep campus blended learning schools.
Through technology and partnership between parents and educators, I-DEA promotes and supports a modern education system that delivers innovative, relevant, and rigorous education to each child.
