When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

When it first implemented a blended-learning program, Lincoln-King Academy used a Lab Rotation model. The school’s Learning Lab was used for a math elective in which students used online math programs under the supervision of a blended-learning instructor. A lab-centered model was ideal when there were few portable devices or adults with blended-learning experience at the school. But after purchasing Chromebooks and familiarizing teachers with blended-learning practices, the school transitioned to a Station Rotation model that is centered in individual classrooms. This model enables a greater degree of personalization for more grade levels at the school. The Learning Lab is now used for intervention and extension work, facilitated by the blended-learning instructor.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

"The biggest challenge for Lincoln-King Academy has been training and supporting teachers in the new blended-learning environment. “Teachers need sustained support— someone who is there to observe and coach them,” said Nichole Husa, a Personalized Learning Officer at Cornerstone. “If blended-learning programs aren’t being monitored and consistently supported, much of the technology just won’t get used.” To address this problem, Lincoln-King and the other Cornerstone Schools offer professional development for teachers which, like its academic program for students, is differentiated to meet each teacher’s needs."

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Husa shared a two-fold rule for success with blended learning: "Provide ongoing, personalized support for each teacher, and focus on planning for the blended classroom."

School Overview

Lincoln-King Academy is a public charter school that serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade in the Detroit area. The school facilitates student success through a standards-based curriculum, rigorous academics, and diverse after-school activities that are designed around students in a safe and nurturing environment. Although the school’s blended-learning model was originally intended for remediation, it has since been integrated into math and ELA instruction for all of its students.
