Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We examined a number of different options and believe that this combination of models is most effective for our students.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Helping students to become goal setters in their own learning. We are overcoming this with a lot of practice, taking small steps, and a lot of individual attention.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

If something doesn't work the first time in spite of a lot of planning, don't be discouraged, keep iterating, keep refining.

School Overview

Moving Everest is a charter school in the Austin community whose mission is to create a school that dramatically transforms the lives of K-8 students and prepares them for success in college and in life through: the delivery of a rigorous and personalized academic program, a focus on holistic education and the development of strong character. We opened our doors in the fall of 2015 with almost 180 kindergartners and first graders and we will add one grade a year through eighth grade.

We know that students in under-resourced neighborhoods often enter school with multiple barriers to learning; lack of a safe and secure environment, one-sized fits all education, inefficient time/schedule structure, lack of social/emotional/physical supports, lack of rigor, low parental involvement, that prevent them from achieving meaningful academic results, deter a genuine love for reading, inhibit healthy physical/emotional development and counteract deep character and values growth. Eliminating these barriers requires the determined efforts of multiple influencers, and a strong home/school/after-school partnership.

Our vision is to provide the Austin neighborhood of Chicago with a robust elementary school that prepares students to enter and excel in a college preparatory high school. We will provide students with a transformative experience that focuses on developing their academic skills while helping them to develop strong character and love for learning.
Our core principles include:
• Personalized learning environment.
• Culture of high expectations.
• Self-pacing and mastery-based instruction.
• Blended instructional model.
• Data-driven instruction.
• Student ownership.
• Focus on reading.
• Character development.
• Social and emotional needs addressed.
• Partnership with strong, well established, and like-minded after-school provider.
