Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

It was very responsive to student needs and allowed us to serve students across our province. We have subsequently narrowed our student base and now only serve Calgary and surrounding area.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Finding a label for our model. Alberta uses the term "blended" in a very different manner and as such they have had a very hard time classifying our school. This is changing slowly as our government updates its definitions and understanding of how technology is used in education.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

We use a combination of the various models and are willing to adapt the school program depending on the needs of our families each year, our space restraints, budget and so on. Soooooo . . . best advice - be flexible!

Select up to two focus areas you feel that you demonstrate leadership in, and tell us why here:

(1) While we are the recognized pioneers in a new delivery model, being "first" is a very challenging position. You have to constantly work at explaining your model and justifying your methods as people don't have requisite knowledge to immediately understand. i.e. smart phones - they are ubiquitous now and people understand their role, function and use but such was not the case just a few years ago.

(2) We are a non-profit, secular, community school. We charge no tuition and operate on only 35% of the funding of a regular (traditional) school. As such, we have had to be very efficient with all aspects of our programming! We plan carefully, constantly look for opportunity and often make do. But if we can do what we do on our very limited budget, then funding should not be a challenge for any other school!

We are very happy to share because the more people embrace "blendEd" learning, the easier our path becomes! (And it let's us move from the justification stage back to the innovation phase!)
