Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We opened the school eight years ago with this blended-learning model. Our goal was simply to offer a flexible and personalized way to learn for students who found that the traditional model of schooling, for diverse reasons, didn't work well for them.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Our learning environment is very student-driven and much of the work is online and independent. Students sometimes struggle to seek help from teachers when they need it, and in this kind of learning environment, they could potentially fall behind quickly. We work very hard not to wait for them to approach us but to catch students in real-time to ensure they keep pace until proven mastery.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

In this learning environment, teachers' ability to make positive change in students’ lives is so great. Given the many options of learning modalities and pacing of learning, there’s no excuse for a student not to gain mastery. Our advice is to never stop seeking that perfect combination of learning experiences for each student. If we haven’t tapped into a student's learning style, we need to keep seeking what’s best for that student. There are no children who don't want to learn; it's only sometimes that due to life circumstances, learning cannot be a priority. Every student comes in want to be successful, and here, we are in the position to help them do just that.
