Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

Each Thrival Academy is a small school and we wanted to leverage technology to make sure our teachers' talents and time are used most effectively. Additionally, the Summit Learning Platform is easy for students to use and access in Thailand and parents can keep track of their children's progress. Finally, the blended learning model allows students to grow as self-directed learners who take charge of their own education.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Our program is a little tricky because it is only a one year long high school. Students on day one are not ready to dive into self-directed learning so it takes a little while for students to adjust to this new style of learning.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Be patient. It’s an adjustment for the students, but also for the staff. Everyone needs to feel prepared and comfortable in order to implement the BL model successfully. It's important to dedicate time to scaffold up to this new model. Remember it’s difficult to make enormous changes, so align as a team as to what’s most important and work towards that.

School Overview

Thrival World Academies flagship school site opened in Oakland, CA in fall 2016 in partnership with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Their pilot program in Oakland is running for the duration of the 2016-2017 school year and they currently have 11 juniors from 4 OUSD high schools enrolled.

They provide publicly subsidized, academically rigorous, education abroad to racially and socioeconomically diverse students in order to bolster their confidence, expand their worldview, and build their networks so that they can successfully engage in our increasingly globalized world. Thrival World Academies believe that international education is central to being an educated person in the 21st century and strive to make it accessible to all students in the United States, regardless of race or class.

Through their globally focused, interdisciplinary curriculum our students are earning all of their required 11th grade credits and spending 3 months of the school year abroad at our site in Thailand.
