Bella Romero Academy of Applied Technology is a K-8 school spread across two campuses and serving 1,130 students. The vision of the school is that all students will graduate high school and achieve their dreams. Students' behavior, achievement, and attendance data are tracked all the way until successful high school graduation. Both cognitive and non-cognitive development are prioritized and measured via The Academy's customized standards-based grading approach. Though some Bella Romero teachers have been using blended-learning principles for years, teachers across the K-8 are in varying stages of implementation across the continuum of personalization. A full scale and more "official" blended-learning program was launched in grades 6-8 in 2014 and the results have been promising: for example, the 7th and 8th grade had the highest rate of growth in the district on state assessments in English Language Arts. The school hopes to use blended learning to improve student achievement, non-cognitive development, student well-being, and teacher job satisfaction.
