When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)


We had some Chromebooks in every classroom last year and began focusing on small group reading and math. We naturally went to more small group after we went 1 to 1. Our kids are highly engaged. This year we bought IXL and Frontrow and teachers are using the dashboards to track student progress.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?


Some teachers resisted because they enjoy whole group more, but they began experimenting and switched very quickly. One struggle early on was getting used to the technology and teaching students to log in to each program. We also had to learn how to keep students on the assigned site.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?


Go slow to go fast. Work hard to implement procedures until everyone in the building has it down. Create a culture that it is okay to take a risk and fail as long as you keep trying. Make adults feel safe. Celebrate your small steps. Allow teachers to demonstrate their procedures and methods.

Leadership Strategies for Implementation: I think we did a very good job of setting up a culture of high expectations for implementation and gave great support. Teachers felt safe to try and fail and to ask for help.
Getting Started with Blended Learning: We decided as a school to be open minded and to admit their are better ways to teach than the old industrial model.
