Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

It is really hard to differentiate instruction for 25 seven year olds, especially if they are particularly noisy, boisterous, or unruly. I have had rotations in my classroom for years in order to help keep their attention, and have recently been incorporating the computers to help them learn on their own. The station rotation gives me solid time with individual students during our workbook station so I can really understand where students are at and meet them at their level. When you give students freedom to talk and move around and own their learning, behavior improves dramatically.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Since I am creating and curating content myself, one of my biggest struggles is keeping up with the class so that we always have content available. Some days I can't do the rotations because I just haven't gotten content ready for that particular lesson, but I aim to catch up during the summer so that we can use online learning every day.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

For an effective Station Rotation in elementary school, the stations really need to be self sustaining and transitions need to be smooth, otherwise there would be no time for the teacher to work closely with students during the rotations. I have ensured that students can be productive and always have work to do so that they can be independent at each station.
