Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We began with a strict station rotation because it was most similar to the "centers" philosophy that many elementary teachers are familiar with already. We quickly realized that "one size fits all" didn't match our philosophy, so we added a flex element to create more of a continuum of blended options.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

The digital resources have proven to be our most challenging element. We ultimately had to move to a new LMS to course correct.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Identify your core practices, and pilot with willing participants first. Nothing that you think is obvious about blended learning will be apparent to everyone. Be overly explicit, seek feedback, and don't be afraid to start over.

Select up to two focus areas you feel that you demonstrate leadership in, and tell us why here:

Confronting our "brutal facts" allowed us the freedom to think differently about how we provide elementary education. We've excelled at piloting core principles and practices of our philosophy in order to help transition to scale more smoothly.
