Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

We needed options available in the school setting and flexibility that the Utah Online School offered in an A La Carte model.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Getting into the schools and funding were the two biggest challenges. The district created a funding opportunity for schools that made it cheaper to share seats throughout the district than for schools to purchase their own seats. Schools then give a flat 7th to pay for the original content courses and 4000.00 per school to pay for the recovery courses.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Work together as a district to create options which support student success.

School Overview

In 2011, Dixie High School's administration implemented a pilot program to help students recover credits and to help increase graduation rates and course options. For the first two years, the program focused on remediation. Since then, the school has integrated options to accelerate student progress using online classes. The blended program at Dixie has also helped meet the needs of students who have medical issues, safe school violations, or are out of school for an extended period of time. Students have also been able to open up their schedules by taking their core classes online and participating in more elective credits during the school day such as theater, dance, art, physical education, and music. The school has increased its graduation rates from 76 percent to 93 percent in just a few years.
