Implementation Q & A

When you first implemented blended learning, why did you choose that particular model? (has your model changed? why?)

To utilize the power of teacher facilitated learning, while maximizing instructional time. We wanted to develop a system that would allow us to constantly evolve our strategies to meet the needs of the students. In order to meet this goal, we needed a model that allowed targeted intervention for struggling students. After year one, we were able to further modify the system by implementing formative assessments at the end of whole group to spot correct deficiencies before students have the opportunity to build on any misconceptions.

What was one of your biggest challenges when going blended, and how did you overcome it?

Finding the necessary hardware and software to support a fully integrated classroom. We were able to seek out other resources outside of DCPS through the development of multiple partnerships.

What's the one piece of advice you'd give to emerging blended-learning programs?

Seriously consider extended periods for any courses that will include blended learning, especially AP courses. Also, a large amount of the struggle associated with the development and implementation is associated with the required hardware and software.
