We chose the Flex model because of our experience at Oakland Unity High School, where our principal was a teacher. At Unity High School, we piloted a mastery-based program and did a lot of research in understanding how to support a mastery-based learning system with blended learning.
The biggest challenge is helping teachers who have never done mastery-based grading or a lot of small group teaching let go of ensuring what students are doing everyday. We spent a lot of time preparing for our pilot launch with our teachers focusing on what our philosophy is and what things will look like moving forward.
We are only able to do all that we are doing today because we were willing to try things out. It is important to take a few changes, try them out, and see what works. You have to stumble and fall a few times before you get it right, and experiments help you know what systems you will need in place before implementing across the whole school.
Oakland Unity Middle School is one of 10 breakthrough schools to receive grant funding from the Rogers Family Foundation to support personalized learning. The school prides itself on its small class sizes, its safe environment that allows students to thrive, and its strong academic support structure that enables students to become their best academic selves.
